Carl A. Carlson - Oct. 9, 1921 - June 21,2009

Carl A. Carlson, age 87, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Sunday, June 21,2009, at the Pleasant View Home at Albert City.

Carl August Carlson, the son of John and Alma (Blomberg) Carlson, was born on October 9, 1921, on the family farm in rural Pocahontas County. As an infant, he was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church (formerly Ljunghed Lutheran Church) in Albert City. He was confirmed there in 1937 and remained a lifelong member. He regularly attended worship services as long as his strength permitted.

Carl attended school through the eighth grade at Marshal Township #9. He graduated in 1936, receiving his diploma at a county-wide ceremony held in Pocahontas.

In 1940, at the age of 19, Carl was stricken with polio which left him with many physical challenges. With patience, determination and creativity, he progressed from being unable to walk without assistance to independently raising livestock and farming.

He loved nature and being outdoors. After retiring from farming, he continued to expand his vegetable and flower gardens. He enjoyed planting new varieties and had flowers blooming from early spring to late fall. During the winter months, he enjoyed reading, baking, and watching the assortment of birds that flocked to the feeders outside his kitchen window. His ceaseless quest for knowledge sent him to the dictionary and encyclopedia or other resource books for any bit of information concerning a bird, a plant, or a word that was new to him. He was able to retain what he learned and shared it for the benefit of others. The radio was Carl’s choice for news, weather, and more recently, worship services.

Carl was a resident of the Pleasant View Home at Albert City from February 2, 2009, until his death on June 21, 2009.

He is survived by his sister: Florence Porath of Albert City, Iowa, his nieces and nephews: Delmar and Jean Carlson, Denise and Steve Sassman, Deb and Jim Travis, Darla and Dan Vonahme, Doug Porath and Phyllis Hyde, Cynthia and Gary Lenhart, Diane and Neal McIntosh, special cousins: Ann and Roy Chase, many great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and many other relatives, here and in Sweden, and his friends.

Funeral services for 87 year old Carl A. Carlson of Albert City, Iowa, who died on, Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa, will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City, Iowa.

Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City, Iowa.

Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.

The Sliefert Funeral Home of Albert City is in charge of arrangements.
