H. Eugene “Gene” Jonas - June 6, 1930 - June 23, 2009
H. Eugene “Gene” Jonas, age 79, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Pleasant View Home at Albert City.
Howard Eugene “Gene” Jonas, the son of Frank and Irene (Eberle) Jonas, was born on a farm near Pocahontas, Iowa, on June 6, 1930. At an early age, Gene moved with his family to Rolfe, Iowa, prior to moving to Laurens. Gene lived most of his youth in Laurens and received his education there, graduating from Laurens High School in 1947.
Gene exchanged his marriage vows with Marjorie Ryon at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Laurens, Iowa, on June 11, 1951, and this couple was blessed with three children: James, Diane, and Michael. Following their marriage, Gene worked at the local furniture store. In 1966, they began farming south of Laurens where they raised their family and resided for 29 years, retiring in 1995. Gene and Marge moved to Albert City in 1995 where they have lived their retirement years. Gene suffered a stroke in 1996. Since November of 2006, Gene has been a resident of the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.
Gene was a renowned trumpet player in his father’s orchestra, the Frank Jonas Orchestra. He shared his gift of music with many people throughout the 32 years he was a part of this musical group. Gene also had many other varied interests that included golfing and watching football and basketball games on television. He was an avid Hawkeye fan and followed their athletic teams. Gene and Marge had a lake home on Lost Island and they thoroughly enjoyed their times together there. Family was an important part of Gene’s life and he especially was proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren and received so much enjoyment from them. Gene cherished the times they shared together and the memories they created for him.
Gene is lovingly remembered by his family: his wife: Marjorie of Albert City, Iowa, his children: Jim Jonas and Diane Jonas, both of Laurens, Iowa, and Mike and Sharon Jonas of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, his grandchildren: Alexis Dietz of Hampton, Iowa, Dominic, Jasmine, Lucas, and Hannah Jonas of Ankeny, Iowa, his two great grandchildren: Hunter and Emma Dietz, his mother: Irene Jonas of Fort Dodge, Iowa, three sisters: Dona Reitmeier of Bigelow, Minnesota, Lois Vander Schel of Chino Valley, Arizona, and Lucile Stumpf of Fort Dodge, other relatives, and the many friendships he established over the years.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Burial will be in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Albert City is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 25, with the family present during that time at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City.
