Raymond E. Davis - Jan. 9, 1914 - June 30, 2009
Raymond E. Davis, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the Buena Vista Manor in Storm Lake.
Raymond Elsworth Davis, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Anna (Lundeen) Davis, was born in rural Albert City, Iowa, on January 9, 1914. Ray lived his youth and received his education in Storm Lake where he was a graduate of Storm Lake High School.
On November 2, 1935, Ray exchanged his marriage vows with Sylvia Jensen in Elk Point, South Dakota and this couple was blessed with two daughters: Patty and Judy. Following their marriage, Ray and Sylvia resided at Sioux City, Iowa before returning to Storm Lake where Ray was employed with the Kaplan’s grocery store. Many years of Ray’s business career were spent in the meat processing business where he was employed with Kingan’s Hy-Grade Plant, Wilson Meat’s, and Ray’s Processing. The Davis’ later moved to Bemidji, Minnesota where they operated Jake’s Drive In for several years. Ray and Sylvia then returned to Storm Lake and he was employed part time with Jones’ Furniture. Sylvia died on November 12, 1981.
Ray was a member of the Storm Lake United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge. Ray and Sylvia enjoyed spending the summer months in Fairbault, Minnesota, where Ray assisted at Bauer’s Resort. He is remembered by his a “jack of all trades” and was very talented at fixing things. Ray also enjoyed the outdoors and liked fishing, camping, and hunting pheasants.
Those who will always cherish his memory include his children: Patty Barnes of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Judy and Danny O’Hara of Mt. Vernon, Texas, 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, his sister: Gertrude Nagl of Carroll, Iowa, other extended family and friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sylvia, one brother: Lloyd Davis and one sister: Irene McCabe.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta, Iowa. Visitation will take place on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake where the family will be present during that time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
