Aleda Stief - Jan. 2, 1913 - July 1, 2009

Aleda Stief, age 96, of Aurelia, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Sunset Knoll Nursing & Rehab in Aurelia.

Aleda Lillia Ida Roggow, the daughter of Henry W. and Louisa M. (Golnitz) Roggow, was born in Spring Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, on January 2, 1913. She lived her youth in that area and received her education through the ninth grade at Spring Township country schools.

Aleda was united in holy matrimony to Clifford Carl Frank Stief on October 11, 1940, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Aurelia, Iowa, and this marriage was blessed with three children: Bernard, Beverly, and Wendell. From 1940 until 1961, Clifford and Aleda were engaged in farming in Spring Township. In April of 1962, they moved to Storm Lake and both of them were employed at Schaegar Produce where Aleda was an egg candler. Following her employment with Schaegar’s, Aleda served as a personal attendant for Mrs. Bye who resided at the Methodist Manor. Aleda then worked in various positions at Gene’s Cakes and Pastries and her last employment was with Bomgaars in Storm Lake, where she retired in 1971.

She was a faithful member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Storm Lake. Aleda was very gifted in doing all types of handwork and was especially talented in embroidery work. She was also very musical and played a trumpet in several area bands. In later years, she passed the time and kept her mind alert by doing crossword and other word type puzzles. Her family will remember how much she enjoyed working in the soil and she had many beautiful flower gardens and cultivated bountiful vegetable gardens, especially her tomato harvest. She will be remembered for her pies and making delicious jellies.

Those who will always cherish her memory include her children: Bernard Stief and Irene of Cherokee, Iowa, Beverly and Robert Shelton of Spencer, Iowa, Wendell Stief and his wife, Jackie, of Storm Lake, Iowa, her grandchildren: Loni Stief and her special friend, Lyle Sargent of Washta, Iowa, Dana and Shari Shelton of Spencer, Iowa, Corey Shelton of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jeffrey and Stacy Stief of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carrie Stief of Altoona, Iowa, Kristina Stief and her special friend, Warren Simpson, of Cherokee, Iowa, her great grandchildren: Jordan Stief of Dow City, Iowa, David and Jason Vogel of Spencer, Iowa, Andrew Shelton of Spencer, Iowa, and Ariel Simpson of Cherokee, Iowa, other extended family and friends.

Aleda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clifford, on September 6, 2003, her daughter-in-law: Pauline Stief, and three sisters: Rosena Pingel, Erna Stief, and Irene Sump.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 6, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake on Sunday evening from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. where the family will be present during that time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Blessed be the memory of Aleda Lillia Ida Stief.
