Lorraine Brown - Mar. 20, 1918 - Apr. 23, 2009

Lorraine Brown, age 91, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at the Pleasant View Home at Albert City.

Lorraine Thieman, the daughter of Herman and Louise (Steinbeck) Thieman, was born on March 20, 1918, on the family farm near Albert City, Iowa. She left the farm at the age of 5 with her family when her father and his four brothers formed the Thieman Harvester Company in Albert City. Lorraine received her education at Albert City and was a 1936 graduate of Albert City High School.

Lorraine was united in marriage to Waldo Brown in Omaha, Nebraska on January 2, 1940. The couple was blessed with two children, Robert and Ruth. Following their marriage, Lorraine and Waldo returned to the farm, where they were engaged in farming until Waldo’s death in April of 1970. After her husband’s death, Lorraine was the manager of the school lunch program for the Albert City-Truesdale Community School.

Following her retirement from the school, she was the manager and cook at the Albert City Senior Center for many years. Lorraine resided on the farm until she moved to Country Side Living in Albert City. She became a resident of Pleasant View Home in Albert City in 2005.

One of the joys of Lorraine’s life was working at the Buena Vista County Fair where Waldo served as the fair secretary. She was also an active supporter of the 4-H program and participated as a local club leader. Lorraine loved to cook and enjoyed serving the traditional Swedish dishes of Waldo’s family. Lutefisk, fruit soup, potato sausage, rye bread, brown beans and pickled herring were some of her specialties. Lorraine was blessed with the gift of not having to follow the directions of a recipe when she cooked. It was only in her later years that she began writing down some of her favorite recipes. However, when others tried to duplicate her cooking, there was always something missing—that was Lorraine’s special touch. She could always be counted on to bake her rye bread and other goodies for bake sales.

Lorraine was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Albert City, where she had been a Sunday School teacher and held several offices within the church. She was active in Ladies Aid and served on many committees. She also enjoyed her membership in the Happy Homemaker’s and Federated Clubs. Lorraine’s grandchildren held a very special place in her heart, and she cherished the times she could spend with them and the enjoyment they brought to her life.

Lorraine is lovingly remembered by her family: son Robert and wife Karla of Marion, Iowa; daughter Ruth Paulsen and husband Andrew of Storm Lake, Iowa; grandchildren: Anna Paulsen and her special friend, Joseph Speers, of Albert City, Iowa; Chris Paulsen of LeMars, Iowa; Patrick Brown of Chicago, Illinois; and Jay Brown and his fiancée, Abigail Sheib, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; brother Larry Thieman of Portland, Oregon; sister Cleone Luttmers of Palm Harbor, Florida; sister-in-law Ruby Thieman of Glidden, Iowa; extended family and a host of friends. Her parents and her husband predeceased her.

Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be held Monday, April 27, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will be in Fairfield Township Cemetery in rural Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 26th at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City, where the family will be present.
