Lawrence Schmidt - Nov. 15, 1911 - May 1, 2009

Lawrence Schmidt, age 97, of Newell, Iowa, died on Friday, May 1, 2009, at his home in Newell.

Lawrence Henry William Schmidt, the son of Henry and Alberta (Reinhart) Schmidt was born in Sheridan Township, Carroll County, Iowa, on November 15, 1911. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith on November 26, 1911, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale, Iowa, and confirmed in his faith at that church on March 26, 1926. Lawrence moved with his family to Storm Lake during his teenage years and was a graduate of the Storm Lake High School.

On April 21, 1935, Lawrence exchanged wedding vows with Lola D. Voge during an Easter Sunday worship service at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Following their marriage, they owned and operated a grocery store in Storm Lake. They continued in the grocery business in Denison, Iowa, Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Columbus, Nebraska. Lawrence and Lola then purchased a grocery store in Newell, Iowa where they operated that business until their retirement. During Lawrence’s retirement years, he served as a meat inspector for the United States government for approximately 10 years. Lola died on September 15, 2003. Lawrence continued to make his home in Newell following his wife’s death.

Lawrence was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church of Newell. He is remembered by his family as being a very patient, precise, and capable gentleman. He was a talented seamstress and made many of his and his wife’s clothes. Lawrence was also an excellent chef and was proud of the “California Room” he decorated in his home. He also took great pride in his flowers, gardening, and grooming his lawn.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews along with other extended family.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two brothers.

Funeral Services for Mr. Schmidt will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will be in the Holstein Cemetery at Holstein, Iowa, at 1:30 p.m.
