Kathryn Waterman - Oct. 8, 1916 - May 4, 2009
Kathryn Waterman, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa died Monday, May 4, 2009 at Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Kathryn Mae Shaw, the daughter of Sam and Clara Belle (Barnes) Shaw, was born at Cresco, Iowa, on October 8, 1916. Kathryn lived her youth in Sioux Rapids, Iowa where she received her education. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the First Lutheran Church of Sioux Rapids.
On December 23, 1931, Kathryn exchanged marriage vows with Lowell L. Waterman. The couple was blessed with five daughters: Joan, Claribell, Joyce, Jeanette and Patricia. Lowell and Kathryn began farming south of the Lincoln Lee Township school, then they moved to a farm three miles south of Rembrandt, and their last farming site was two miles north of the canning factory in Storm Lake. In addition to being a devoted homemaker and mother and assisting on the farm, Kathryn worked for three years as a waitress at the “3 & 71 Truck Stop,” where she made many lasting friendships. She was also employed at the Lee Store in Storm Lake for nine years. Following their retirement from farming, Lowell and Kathryn moved to their home on Elmwood Drive in Storm Lake. While residing in Storm Lake, Kathryn worked at the Alco store for nine years.
Kathryn became a charter member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Storm Lake in 1952. Music was an enjoyable part of Kathryn’s life, and she played the organ and sang in the church choir. Kathryn’s family was the focal point of her life and she was so very proud of her daughters. She was a gifted seamstress and sewed her daughter’s dresses and also made many beautiful quilts. Kathryn cherished the times her family could gather together, and she will be remembered for her efforts in cooking all the family dinners. Kathryn was a very happy person and will be deeply missed by the people whose lives she touched.
Kathryn’s life is lovingly remembered by her family: Joan and Jr. Williams of Spencer, Iowa; Claribell and Dick Larson of Callendar, Iowa; Joyce and Fred Meyer of Marshalltown, Iowa; Jeanette Waterman and her dog, Precious, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and Patricia Lilly of Sioux City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Mike (Cindy) Williams, Debbie (Don) Sundall, Marlon Larson, Bobby Larson, Gary (Roberta) Larson, Randy Meyer, Scott (DeAnn) Meyer, Peggy Meyer, Sherry (Rick) Clark, Tammy (Bruce) Norgaard, and Terry Ensley; 23 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Edgar Shaw of Walnut Creek, California; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell, in 1992; and her sister, Maxine Frederick in 1974.
Memorial services for Mrs. Waterman will be held Friday, May 8, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place at the church for one hour prior to the start of services.
