William J. Shold - July 20, 1920 - Mar. 31 2009

William Jennings Shold, age 88, of Albert City, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

William Shold was born July 20, 1920 in Albert City, Iowa, the son of Edward and Agnes (Wenell) Shold. He was baptized and confirmed as a youth in the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City, where he was a faithful lifetime member. He attended country school for eight years before graduating from Albert City High School in 1937. He continued his education for three years at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

Bill, as he was known for most of his life, entered the United States Army on September 29, 1942 and served stateside during World War II. He was honorably discharged on February 16, 1946.

On November 20, 1943, Bill was united in marriage to Inez Harald at the Lutheran church in Albert City. The couple was blessed with three children: Grant, Becky and Judy.

Bill and Inez raised their family on their farm near Albert City. Bill served on the board of directors of the Albert City Elevator and the Albert City Threshermen & Collectors Association. He was a member of American Legion Post 299 in Albert City. He also served on the church board and on the church building committee.

Bill loved being a farmer and loved teaching all his grandchildren how to operate a tractor. He and Inez shared an enjoyment of musical theater. As a farmer, Bill was at one with nature, and he especially enjoyed fishing and being among nature’s wonders.

Bill loved his family above all earthly things and treasured the time he could spend with them. In his later years, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Inez, of Albert City; his son, Grant (Donna) Shold of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota; his daughter, Becky Dietrich of Omaha, Nebraska; his daughter, Judy (Steve) Bowers of Coralville, Iowa; his grandchildren: Dawn (Chad) Walz, Sara Shold, Bradley Shold, Stacia (Chris) Weber, Brian Denham, Matthew Denham and Ron Bowers; his great-grandchildren: Ashlie and Ellie Walz, and Kyle Weber; his sister, Viola Erickson of Des Moines, Iowa; extended family and many friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Agnes Shold.

Funeral Services for Mr. Shold will be held Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will be in Fairfield Township Cemetery in rural Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Friends may call on Friday, April 3rd from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert, where the family will be present.
