Gretel Brummer, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died August 18, 2009 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Gretel Rose Anderson was born May 23, 1923 in Schaller, Iowa to Floyd and Leona (Kramer) Anderson. She was baptized in 1924 at the First Presbyterian Church in Schaller. Gretel graduated from Schaller High School in 1940 and later attended Buena Vista College. After college, she was employed at the Commercial Trust & Savings Bank in Storm Lake, Iowa.

On September 27, 1946, she was united in marriage to Murlen Brummer at the First Presbyterian Church in Schaller. The couple settled on a farm northeast of Storm Lake, where they raised their two children, Marlys and Lindsey.

Together they spent fifty years on the farm where Gretel made a warm and comfortable home for her family. She was a member of the St. Johns United Church of Christ serving as an organist and on the Ladies Aid. After Murlen’s death in 1996, Gretel moved to Storm Lake and joined the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. She was part of the Alpha Group in the church and enjoyed playing the piano for church services at the local nursing homes. Gretel always enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, and visiting with friends and family.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Marlys Von Stein and husband Steve of Scottsdale, Arizona, her son Lindsey Brummer of Abilene, Kansas; her grandchildren: Shawn Von Stein and wife Cindy of Bondurant, Iowa, Dirk Von Stein and wife Sheila of Grimes, Iowa, Zachary Von Stein of Bondurant, Iowa, Todd Von Stein of Des Moines, Iowa, Darrin Von Stein of Brooklyn, New York, Hannah and Kendra Brummer of Abilene, Kansas; her great grandchildren; Garrett, Preston, Michael and Noah Von Stein; her sister, Jean Hogue of Schaller, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; extended family and many friends.

Gretel was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Leona Anderson, and her husband, Murlen.

Visitation: 5-7:00 p.m. August 21, 2009 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa
Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. August 22, 2009 at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
Interment: August 22, 2009 at St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery in Rural Newell, Iowa
