Arlene Griffel, age 84, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died August 18, 2009 at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell, Iowa.Arlene Burdette Schubert, daughter of John and Irene (Carstens) Schubert was born December 20, 1924 on a farm near Holstein, Iowa. She attended Holstein school until 5th grade. From 5th – 8th grade she attended Logan #3 Country school and later returned to Holstein High School where she graduated in 1944.
Arlene grew up and lived in the Holstein area until September 2, 1951 when she was united in marriage to Durlyn Griffel at the Methodist Church in Holstein, Iowa. Together they lived in Albert City for a year before moving to a farm near Truesdale. This couple was blessed with one daughter, Cynthia Lynn.
Arlene was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake and the Birthday Club. She loved being able to travel. She was very active in her grandson, Chris’ life and enjoyed following his athletic and school events throughout the years. Arlene went on several bus trips and especially enjoyed her trip out to Eugene, Oregon. She enjoyed listening to music, dancing and playing the piano by ear. Arlene had a passion for gardening and loved her flowers. She shared a strong relationship with her one and only daughter, Cynthia, and she will be deeply missed by her.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) and her husband Terry Stambach of Storm Lake, Iowa; her sisters: Dorothy Grell and Mary Lou (Wendell) Sorensen all of Holstein, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Audrey Schubert of Holstein; her grandson, Chris and his wife Beth Stambach of Altoona, Iowa; her great grandchildren: Marissa, Alex, Zachary and Hannah Stambach all of Altoona, Iowa; extended family and many friends.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, John and Irene Schubert; husband, Durlyn Griffel; her brother Harold Schubert; her brothers and sister-in-laws, Milton and Vivian Griffel and Alice and Albert Buhr.
Visitation: 4-8:00 p.m. August 21, 2009 at Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. August 22, 2009 at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa
