August 20, 1930 - April 1, 2018Kenneth A. Putzier, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, April 1, 2018, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Kenneth A. Putzier was born on August 20, 1930, in rural Woodbury County. He attended a country school through the sixth grade and graduated from Battle Creek high school in 1947. Then, he enrolled at Gates Waterloo Business College. Until June 1951, he worked as a bookkeeper before being drafted into the Army. Subsequently, he served for two years during the Korean War. On August 29, 1953, he married Mary Lucille Waters in Cherokee, Iowa. In May of 1956, he graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a BS degree in Accounting. That fall, Ken passed the CPA examination and moved to Kansas City where he worked for a national accounting firm for four and a half years. In December of 1960, he joined a local CPA firm in Storm Lake and became a partner with Hunzelman and Putzier in 1963. He retired from the accounting firm on December 31, 1995.
Active in the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants, Ken served, at one point, as its president. Appointed by the governor of Iowa to serve three, three-year terms on the Iowa Board of Accountants, Ken, also, served as its Chairman. In addition, Ken belonged to the Storm Lake Rotary Club, serving one year as its president. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce, the Storm Lake Chapter of SCORE, and Storm Lake Pride. Involved in Storm Lake little league baseball, he, also, served in the Boy Scouts and with the YMCA Indian Guides. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Ken enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. His hobbies included golfing, fishing, hunting, sailing, and following the University of Nebraska and the University of Iowa football teams.
Ken is survived by his four children: Patrick (Kathleen) Putzier, of Salina, Kansas, Jeffery (Jane) Putzier, of Boone, Iowa, Ann Putzier, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mark Putzier (Kim Milligan), of Omaha, Nebraska; ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary; and two sisters, Norma Castor and LaDonna Ledden; and a brother, Roger Putzier.
A funeral mass will be offered on Monday, April 9, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place Sunday, April 8, 2018, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Memorials may be directed to UnityPoint Hospice or St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
