Duane Dale Friedrich, 69, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Alta, died on Saturday, August 31, 2016, at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Duane Dale Friedrich was born on November 5, 1946, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Harold and Frances Friedrich. Baptized into the Christian faith at home and confirmed as a follower of Jesus Christ at St. John’s Lutheran, rural Alta, he attended first through the eighth grades also at St. John’s Lutheran. Then, he attended high school at Alta, graduated from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, and earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics at Iowa State University in Ames. He taught in Boone, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Houston, Texas. For nearly thirty years, however, he worked at Getty Oil, Texaco, and Shell Oil.

He married Elizabeth Barnett in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Nov. 25,1989.

Duane is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Houston, Texas; his sister, Dorothy, and her husband, Richard Symonsbergen, of Omaha, Nebraska; his brother, David, and his wife, Patricia, of Alta; and his sister-in-law, Charlene Friedrich, of New Ulm, Minnesota; his nieces and nephews: Rick, and his wife, Lori Symonsbergen, Lori and her husband, Lyle Newburn, Trent, and his wife, Lynette Friedrich, Kara Friedrich-Napierala, Chad and his wife, Shelley Friedrich, and Lisa Friedrich; his brother-in-law, Wayne Barnett, and his sister-in-law, Joyce, and her husband, Mike Kalthoff.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Frances Friedrich, of Alta; his brother, James Friedrich, of New Ulm, Minnesota; and his nephew, Robert Symonsbergen, of Nebraska City, Nebraska.

His family and friends will always remember Duane as a chatty, happy, and caring person committed to teaching math. A socially active man, he, also, enjoyed baseball (huge Dodger’s fan) and playing in Bridge Tournaments with his close friend, Mark Wallet. Deeply involved in his church and a devoted student of God’s Word, he, passionately, shared Jesus with friends, co-workers, and neighbors. In his last days, he said, “I want people to know that our Triune God is Supreme!”

A memorial service will be held on September 2, 2016, at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas. Interment will follow on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Alta (Hanover).
