Vera M. Buckendahl
Dec 27, 1917 - Dec 22, 2015

Alta, Iowa

Vera M. Buckendahl, age 97, of Alta, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the Exira Care Center of Exira.

Vera Mae Buckendahl, a daughter of Claude and Laura Pfieffer Peck, was born on December 27, 1917, at her parents’ home in Cherokee County, Iowa.

Baptized and confirmed at Maryhill, Vera attended Meriden Community School, graduating in 1935. On November 28, 1940, she married Edwin Buckendahl at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. To their union, four children were born: Jerry, Eddie, Jane, and James W.

The day after they married, they moved to Venice, California, for three years. Vera, then, moved back to Meriden while Edwin served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1945, after Edwin returned home from his tour of duty, they made their home in Storm Lake, Iowa, and in 1953, they moved to Alta, Iowa.

Vera was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. She made her religion and faith a priority in her life. In their later years, she and Edwin enjoyed traveling together. Most of all, however, she found her greatest joy in taking care of her family and home. Indeed, she cherished the time she spent visiting and keeping in touch with those that she knew and loved.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Laura Peck; her husband, Edwin Buckendahl; her daughter-in-law, Vernie Buckendahl; her son-in-law, Larry Beckendorf; her brothers and sisters: Wilmer (Helen) Peck, Betty (Bruce) Cranston, Marie (Bob) Sand, and Walter (Penny) Peck; her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Maurice Moorman, Willard Lundquist, Clara (Fred) Lullman, and Harvey J. (Freida) and Wilbert (Martha) Buckendahl.

Vera is survived by her children, Jerry Buckendahl, of Alta, Iowa, Eddie (Carol) Buckendahl, of Enumclaw, Washington, Jane Beckendorf, and her special friend, Kent Paulsen, both of Exira, Iowa, and James W. (Melody) Buckendahl, of Alta; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters: Marjorie Lundquist, of Meridan, Iowa, Dorothy Moorman, of Los Angeles, California, Lester (Mary) Peck, of Nampa, Idaho, and Joyce (Duane) Anderson, of Alta, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, December 26, 2015, at 1:30 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with the Rev. J. David Esquiliano officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Storm Lake. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.
