He, then, returned to his job with the post office and married Jean Schramm in 1947 in Linn Grove. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, John and David.

An Elder of the Riverside Presbyterian Church, Bob served as Clerk of Session. Active in the American Legion (served as adjutant), the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine and Consistory (Scottish Rite), he, also, served on the Buena Vista County Veterans Commission, spent four years on the Board of Directors of the Linn Grove Telephone Company, and worked for six years as the Linn Grove City Clerk. In 1984, Bob retired from the post office after serving as a clerk and the last 36 years as a rural mail carrier. During the last few years, he had a route requiring him to drive 100 miles per day. A member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, he had served as District President of the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

After the passing of their spouses, Bob married Birdella Young.
