May 4, 1947 - May 2, 2014

Darlene P. Lydell, 66, of Alta, died on Friday, May 2, 2014, at the Waverly Care Center in Waverly, Nebraska. Cancer may have taken Darlene’s earthly vessel, but it could not destroy her loving and caring spirit. She is now in the glorious presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

A daughter of Lloyd and LaVonne (Christensen) Murphy, Darlene Phyllis was born on May 4, 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa. She attended schools in West Bend and Farnhamville and graduated from Carroll High School. Next, she attended Nettleton Business Training College and then Iowa Central Community College taking secretarial courses and earning an Associate’s degree. She continued her studies and earned a certificate to work as a CNA. For twenty years, she worked as a CNA in Humboldt and Aurelia, Iowa, and various other places.

On January 18, 1970, Darlene married David Lydell at Fort Hood, Texas.

A very talented seamstress and knitter as well as skilled at doing needlepoint, she meticulously made sure in completing her projects that the back of a article was as pretty as the front. She loved to bowl and was proud of the 600 series that she had bowled. An avid reader, she read more than one hundred books a year. She loved all types of music. She told her great- nephew to remember that she loved all music including opera because of the story it told.

David and Darlene spent many years traveling to the Iowa State Fair and various county fairs in Iowa. After David retired, they traveled down the southern states of the United States and on to Jamaica during the summer of 2013.

Darlene is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert and William Hodges.

Survivors include David Lydell, of Alta, her husband of 44 years; two sisters, Judy, and her husband, Darwin Thede, of Apache Junction, Arizona, and Pamela, and her husband, Brian Faubion, of Lincoln, Nebraska; and two brothers, David Murphy, of Apache Junction, Arizona, and Patrick, and his wife, Kelly Murphy, of Humphrey, Nebraska; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services for Darlene will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta with the Rev. Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial will take place in the Scandinavian Cemetery, rural Alta. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 until 7:30 P.M. at the Redig Funeral Home in Aurelia and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
