December 12, 1926 - January 25, 2014

Mavis Genevieve Marxen, a daughter of Arthur E. and Marcia S. (Coddington) Johnson, was born December 12, 1926, in Marathon, Iowa. She spent her childhood years in Marathon where she attended grade school. In 1940, her family moved to Laurens where she started high school. Later, they moved to Webb where she graduated from Garfield-Webb High School in 1944. Next, she was employed at the Clay County Ration Board during World War II.

On October 24, 1953, Mavis married Darold “Dutch” Marxen at the Methodist Parsonage in Jackson, Minnesota. They spent the early years of their marriage in Spencer, Iowa. In 1976, however, they moved to Spirit Lake where they lived until they retired, and then, they returned to Spencer in 1985 where they had made their home ever since.

Mavis worked as a bookkeeper for Jersey Dairy for twelve years and for Chuck Whittenburg Distributors for thirty years. A member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, she played a very active role in the church. She enjoyed volunteering for various organizations and spending time at the Spencer Community Theatre and Spencer Senior Center.

Mavis passed away at the Spencer Hospital on January 25, 2014, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dutch, on August 8, 1996; and one brother, Dale Johnson.

Mavis is survived by her cousins and many friends.

SERVICES: Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, Pastor Len Halvorson officiating.

CASKET BEARERS: Amos and Virginia Christensen, Rocky and Yvonne Duhn, Carey and Mary Wilkens, Michael and Sheryl Thu.

VISITATION: Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.

MUSIC: “The Lord's Prayer,” Congregational Hymns: “Beautiful Savior,” “Borning Cry.”
Organist - Stephen Baker; Soloist - Virginia Christensen.

INTERMENT: Crown Hill Cemetery, Ruthven, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
