Kenneth Ingman Hoyne, a son of Kenneth and Ellen (Siebert) Hoyne, was born on July 17, 1920, in Hurley, South Dakota. He spent his childhood years in Chicago and later, in Kadoka, South Dakota, before moving to Centerville, South Dakota, where he received his education, graduating from Centerville High School in 1938. Next, he attended South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings for one year and Sioux Falls College for two years before earning a BA degree from Dakota Wesleyan College in 1942.

In July of 1942, he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he served with the mechanized cavalry. He played with the Army band for nine months in Panama and was, later, assigned to Paris, Texas, for another nine months. Eventually, he was transferred to Europe where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Injured in combat, he spent the next four months in a hospital. Sufficiently recovered from his injuries, he was sent back to Europe and worked as a radio operator while attending the University of Biarritz in southwest France. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to the United States and attended the University of Iowa where he finished his Master's Degree and teaching degree.

On August 14, 1949, Kenneth married Opal Williamson at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa. During his career, he taught music in Peterson for one year and in Royal for six years before eventually moving to Sutherland, Iowa, where he taught instrumental music for twenty-nine years before retiring in 1984.

He enjoyed singing with “The Four Nubbins” barbershop quartet for six years. A past president of the Iowa and North West Iowa Bandmasters Associations as well as a charter member of the Ruritan, he, also, belonged to the American School Band Directors Association and the American Legion Post #152 in Sutherland. A member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland, he regarded his family as the most important part of his life.

Ken passed away at the Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar, Iowa, on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Opal, in 2010; and one sister, Maridell Mark.
