Ruth M. Huffman, age 92, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Monday, November 11, 2013, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Ruth Marie Eaton, the youngest daughter of nine children of John F. and Emma A. (Damstrom) Eaton, was born in Marathon, Iowa, on September 24, 1921. She began her education in Webb, Iowa, and completed it in Jolley, Iowa, graduating from the Jolley High School.

Ruth married David Wesley Huffman on April 23, 1941, in Jackson, Minnesota. They were subsequently blessed with seven children: Darwin, Sharon, Wesley, Lonnie, Lois, Louis, and Frances. Ruth and David spent their lives farming near Sioux Rapids. Along with caring for and raising her family, Ruth also worked alongside David in the field. She was truly a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. David died in November of 1999. Ruth continued to make her home on the farm before entering the Sioux Care Center in October of 2009.

A member of the First United Church of Sioux Rapids and the Pony Express and a former member of the Eagles Club, Ruth was also an accomplished seamstress who sewed all the clothes for her family. Like many farm wives, she had a very large vegetable garden and did a great deal of canning and freezing. She also raised as many as three hundred chickens at a time and dressed the roosters for sale. Ruth and David also loved several kinds of dancing including ballroom dancing, clogging, waltzing, and jitterbugging.

Ruth’s life will always be remembered and cherished by her family which includes her children: Wesley and Dolly Huffman, Frances Noll, Lois and Kenny Patten, and Sharon and Don Patten, all of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, as well as Lonnie and Linda Huffman, of Parker, Colorado, and Louis and Diana Huffman, of Aurelia, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; and forty great grandchildren; along with nieces; nephews; other extended family members; and many lifetime friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David; her son, Darwin; four brothers: Lester, Leo, Dwight, and Clinton; and four sisters: Ruby, Lois, Elsie, and Reva.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 14, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
