Verniele Jane Hallengren, age 87, of Alta, Iowa, died peacefully on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at the Sunset Knoll Care and Rehab Center in Aurelia, Iowa.

Verniele Jane Glawe was born on May 28, 1926, in Holstein, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Effie (Thorborg) Glawe.

Growing up, she attended country school in Ida County until her 8th grade year.

After her mother passed away in 1940, Verniele lived with her father until his death in 1941. After his passing, she kept house for her aunt and uncle, Alvin and Hertha Boock, until she married Lloyd Warren Hallengren on June 22, 1944. They were blessed with five children: Katherine, Bruce, Richard, Leslie, and James.

A lifelong homemaker, Verniele also took pride in her large vegetable garden. As a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, she valued her family and friends and treasured spending time with them. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Bruce (Deborah) Hallengren, of Rockford, Illinois, Leslie (Therese) Hallengren, of Rock Valley, Iowa, and James (Linda) Hallengren, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; her son-in-law, Merle Larson, of Rockford, Illinois; her grandchildren: Amy Muraski, of Rockford, Illinois, Scott (Cheryl) Larson, of Frankfort, Indiana, Keith (Michelle) Larson, of Greentown, Indiana, Timothy (Beth) Larson, of Beloit, Wisconsin, Eric (Jessica) Hallengren, of Spruce Pine, Alabama, Dana Hallengren, of North Liberty, Iowa, Coty (Thad) Wallin, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Shane Hallengren, of Holstein, Iowa; her great-grandchildren: Katie Butler; Eric Cupp; Alex and Harrison Hallengren; Micah, Allison, Austin, Andrea, and Kylee Larson; Emily Neslund; and Zander Wallin; her brother, Lloyd (Janith) Glawe, of Holstein, Iowa; and her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law; as well as many nieces; nephews; extended family members; and friends.

Verniele was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her son, Richard Hallengren; her daughter, Katherine Larson; an infant granddaughter, Annette Hallengren; and a great-grandson, Ryan Larson.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m., December 03, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 1:30 p.m., December 03, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: December 03, 2013, at the Scandinavian Cemetery in Alta, Iowa.
