July 7, 1934 - December 24, 2018

JoAnn Stanton, age 84, of Laurel, Nebraska, formerly of Alta, Iowa, died on Monday, December 24, 2018, in Wayne, Nebraska.

JoAnn Hansen was born July 7, 1934, in Alta, Iowa, to Alvin and Helen (Larson) Hansen. Raised in the Lutheran faith, she remained a long-time member of the Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Before graduating from Alta High School in 1952, she attended rural schools. On November 30, 1963, JoAnn married Glenn Stanton in Jackson, Minnesota. Subsequently, they were blessed with one son, Scott Stanton. Eventually, they moved back to Iowa. A member of the Telephone Pioneers in the state of Iowa, JoAnn worked as a telephone operator throughout her career. In addition, with her husband, she served as President of the Iowa Square and Round Dance Federation. Moreover, she served as president of the Sunnyside School PTA and the women’s circle at Morningside Lutheran Church. Very proud of her Swedish heritage and well known for decorating every room of her home for Christmas, she enjoyed traveling and playing cards with many friends in her free time.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Scott (Judith) Stanton, of Laurel, Nebraska; her grandchildren: Justin, Austin, and Kaitlin Stanton; and Jason and Aaron Kent; her niece, Shelley (Denny) Koopman, of Alta, Iowa; her nephew, Gary (Deb) Demers, of Sioux City, Iowa; and her stepson, Daniel Stanton, of Colorado; as well as extended family members and friends. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glenn Stanton; an infant daughter, Nancy; her son, Douglas Kent; and her sisters: Phyllis and Jeanette.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in ALTA. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
