July 21, 1942 ~ October 29, 2018 (age 76)

Richard "Dick" E. Katschman, age 76, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on Monday, October 29, 2018, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.

Dick, a son of Hershel and Lora (Hoose) Katschman, was born at California, Missouri, on July 21, 1942. He lived his youth in Council Bluffs where he attended Manawa Elementary School, Longfellow Middle School, and Abraham Lincoln High School. Following his schooling, he worked for a farm machinery company in Council Bluffs. From July 5, 1966, to April 23, 1968, he, faithfully, served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and advancing to the rank of sergeant.

On June 25, 1969, Dick married LaDonna Smith in Millard, Nebraska. Together, they raised four children: Cynthia, Brenda, Richard Duane, and Michael. Following their wedding, Dick and LaDonna lived in Council Bluffs where he worked for Midwest Walnut and later for Blue Star Foods. In addition, he drove a truck for Lonnie Brizendine. In November of 1974, Dick and LaDonna came to make their home in Sioux Rapids. For eighteen years, he worked for Ranco before accepting a job with Scrivner in Laurens. Of all his jobs, Dick enjoyed the last one the most at the Little Sioux Golf and Country Club in Sioux Rapids. Civic minded, he served with the Sioux Rapids Fire Department for twenty-six years.

A member of the Sioux Rapids American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW, Dick will be remembered as an avid golfer who, also, enjoyed skeet shooting, playing cribbage as well as all other types of card games, and snowmobiling. Dick treasured his family, and he loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. Indeed, he expressed his love by giving each one a special nickname.

Dick’s life is loved, honored, and cherished by his family which includes his wife, LaDonna, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his children: Cynthia Garthoff, of Early, Iowa, Brenda (Tim) Peters, of Wall Lake, Iowa, Rich (Renee) Katschman, of Norwalk, Iowa, and Mike (Kasi) Katschman, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; a “special daughter”- Julie Burrell, of Rembrandt, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jared (Brittany) Garthoff; Brady (Haylee), Brooklyn, Jakob, and Sarah Katschman; Dillon Kunneke; Aaron, Holli (Craig Sinclair), and Ryan (Michelle) Landcaster; Ian, Riley, and Skyler Lockwood; Shelly (Ryan) Sup; Kayla (Cody) Terry; and Emily Worthan; and his great grandchildren: “Baby Garthoff;” Alaina and Kaylee Landcaster; Carson, Creighton, and Emerson, and Onisia Sup; Kilian and Kieran Terry; and Owen and Olyvia Worthan; as well as by nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his step-dad: Lora and Gerald Eblen, his father- and mother-in-law, Russell and Ila Smith, an infant brother, Forrest Dean, and a sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Tom Brown.

Funeral services will take place Friday, November 2, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids with full military rites by the Sioux Rapids American Legion. Visitation will take place Thursday, November 1, 2018, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
