November 24, 1961 - August 23, 2018

Joyce Ann (Kruse) Sabel, age 56, passed away on August 23, 2018, at Kavanagh Hospice House from ovarian cancer after fighting a nearly seven-year battle. Her funeral will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Royal, Iowa, on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. Visitation with the family present is scheduled for one hour before the service.

Joyce was born on November 24, 1961. She lived on the Kruse family farm near Royal her first eighteen years. In 1980, she graduated from Clay Central High School. In 1982, she earned an Associate of Business degree at Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa. She lived and worked in the Storm Lake area for fifteen years where she found employment at Citizen’s First National Bank, Buena Vista Stationary and Printing, Western Iowa Synod of ELCA, and the Buena Vista Work Activity Center during this time. A member of St Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, she sang with the Senior Choir and served as pianist for the Junior Choir and Sunday School. Moreover, she became an accompanist for special music groups and played the piano for a few weddings.

Joyce married Tom Sabel on July 19, 1997, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal where she was also baptized and confirmed. She and Tom moved to Spencer and worked while attending Buena Vista University’s Spencer site. Joyce earned her BA degree in 2001. In December of 2000, they moved to Newton, Iowa, where she worked at the Grinnell Mutual Insurance Company and the Caldwell Law firm. In 2006, she started working for the State of Iowa, Department of Education, where she remained until November 2017. She joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Newton.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Tom, and her cat, Sidney, of Urbandale, Iowa; her parents, Roger and Betty Kruse, of Peterson, Iowa; her step-son and his wife, Brian and Jaime Sabel, of Memphis, Tennessee; her step-daughter, Jennifer; and her step-grandson, Jon, of Dallas Center, Iowa; her brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Joyce Kruse, of Everly, Iowa; her sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Steve Golay, of Perry, Iowa; her nephew and his wife, Javan and Danielle Kruse, and their children, Ali and Nate, of Hartley, Iowa; her niece, Alecia, and her husband, Casey, and their son, Luke, of Alta, Iowa; her brother-in-law and his wife, Joe and Denise Sabel, of Sisseton, South Dakota, and their son, Jeff, of Big Lake, Minnesota; and her brother-in-law and his wife, Matt and Laurie Sabel, and their children: Jacob, Emily, and Jamie, also of Big Lake, Minnesota; as well as by many other relatives and friends.

Joyce was predeceased by her maternal and paternal grandparents, her Uncle Dick and Aunt Sis Petersen; her cousins: David Petersen, Jolene and Stan Munson, and Marcus Sabel.
