April 27, 1945 - September 2, 2018Doug Peters, age 73, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, September 2, 2018, at his home in Storm Lake.
Douglas Lee Peters was born on April 27, 1945, to Lowell and Joy (Meyer) Peters in Storm Lake, Iowa. Baptized on May 20, 1945, in Newell, Iowa, and confirmed on May 17, 1959, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, he married Sharen Kay Hansen at St John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake on August 15, 1964. Three children were born to this marriage: Patrick, April, and Matthew.
Doug enjoyed helping his grandfather farm and, later, trucking livestock for Peters Bros Trucking. In 1971, he incorporated his trucking business to establish Peters Trucking, Inc. He enjoyed hauling cattle and hogs and worked as a hog buyer for John Morrell for nine years. He, then, pursued hauling conversion vans to the west coast. Next, he moved on to dry vans, hauling turkey feathers to Texas and onto California and bringing sunflower seed back for DeKalb. In his later years, he hauled seed corn for Monsanto.
During the week, the whole family worked hard, but they enjoyed the weekends by going to movies and taking mini-vacations. Skilled at shooting pool, Doug belonged to a Storm Lake pool league.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sharen Peters, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sons, Patrick (Bridgett) Peters, of Westville, Indiana, and Matthew (Jennifer) Peters, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his daughter, April Harding, and her fiancé, Gary Toyne, of Palo, Iowa; his grandchildren: Katie (Dan) McMullen, of Treynor, Iowa, Megan (Jeremiah) Avise-Rousch, of Clinton, Iowa, Jacquelyn (Brett) Newendorp, of Pella, Iowa, Sadie (Brady) Santee, of Omaha, Nebraska, Bradley (Emily) and Kyle (Christin) Harding, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kaylee Peters, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his great grandchildren: Emrys, Jacob, Ray Allen, and Spencer Harding; Logan and Trestyn Lawrence; Dorothy Joy McMullen; and Noelle Avise-Rousch; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Joy Peters; his in-laws, Maurice and Dorothy Hansen; his brother, Dennis Peters; and his brother-in-law, Harold Hansen.
Doug would like to thank the following for all their help and kindness: Jason Huisenga, DO, and staff, Jackson Medical (Lisa Roder), UnityPoint Hospice (Lacey, Linda and all others in their staff), Hospital Nurses, all care givers and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 7, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, September 6, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The family has requested that casual attire be worn. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
