The Lord called Marvin A. Grote to his heavenly home on June 22, 2018. He passed away at the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell, Iowa.

Marvin Arthur Grote, a son of Harry and Anna (Wiebe) Grote, was born on May 12, 1926, on the family farm in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, Iowa. Baptized as an infant at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake, Iowa, and confirmed at that church on Palm Sunday, 1940, he received his education through the 8th grade at the Zion Parochial School. He, then, farmed with his father and helped other farmers in the area.

On August 14, 1949, Marvin married Edna Ripke, also at Zion Lutheran Church. Their union was blessed with one son, Larry. Marvin loved the land and farming with Edna and Larry. In 1963, he was hired to manage the Hy Grade hog buying station in Albert City where he, subsequently, made many friends. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing cards, and having coffee with his friends.

A lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, he served on the church council, as an elder, and on other church committees. A member of the Walther League, the Men’s Club, and the choir, he loved sports and enjoyed coaching 7th and 8th grade basketball at Zion Parochial school. In later years, some of those former students would, still, greet him with “Hi, Coach” which always brought a smile to his face. A leader of the Grant Township 4H Beavers, he assisted with the Albert City FFA and received an honorary Chapter Farmer Award.

Those left to cherish his memory include Edna, his wife of sixty-eight years of Storm Lake, Iowa; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Janene, of Newell, Iowa; his grandsons: Christoffer (Jill) Adams, of Belle Plaine, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Carson and Denisyn, and James (Jenny) Adams, of Newell, Iowa; and his great-great-grandchildren: Riley, Elizabeth, Kolette and Kinsley; as well as other extended family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Anna; his brothers, Roy (Marie) and Raymond (Verlyn) Grote; his sister, Gladys (Hugh) Sharp; and a nephew, Phillip Grote.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Burial will follow in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
