Leon Haahr, age 93, of Newell, Iowa, died on Sunday, June 10, 2018, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center.

Leon Haahr, a son of Vernon and Anna (Kruse) Haahr, was born on March 14, 1925, in Newell, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, he attended grade school and later graduated from Newell Consolidated School. Then, on May 27, 1945, he married Ruby Lund at Nain Lutheran Church. To their union, three children were born: Dennis, Dana, and Ronald.

A lifetime member of Nain Lutheran Church, he dedicated his life to serving his church and his community. Besides donating his time on the church council and singing in the choir, he served for ten years on the board of the Lutheran School of Theology located in Chicago. In addition, he supported his community as a member of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center (BVRMC) Foundation Board.

Recognized as an Iowa Master Farmer and an Iowa Master Pork Producer, Leon enjoyed a successful farming career. A longtime 4-H leader and member of the Buena Vista County Fair Board, he loved participating in community affairs and spending time with his family. Moreover, in his later years, he enjoyed woodworking and golfing. Without a doubt, he will be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ruby, of Newell, Iowa; his sons, Dennis (Jane) Haahr, of Ames, Iowa, and Dana (Joyce) Haahr, of Newell, Iowa; his sister, Verla Reding, of St. Peter, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Nik Haahr, Lauren (Jeff) Wood, Traci (Matt) Pawlowski, and Tammi Snow; his great-grandchildren: Easton, Aaron, Justin, Cody, Stephanie, and Mikayla; his great-great-grandchildren: Anthony, Anna, and Lexi.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Vernon; his son, Ron; his brother; Donald Haahr; his sister-in-law, Betty Haahr; and his brother-in-law, Bill Reding.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place Tuesday, June 12, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
