John H. Westphal
July 6, 1935 - April 23, 2018

Having a strong faith in Christ, John Westphal, 82, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018, at the Humboldt Hospital.

The youngest of six children born to Henry and Clara Westphal in Aurelia, Iowa, John came into this world on July 6, 1935. He graduated from Aurelia High School in 1953 and from Westmar College in 1957. Then, he earned a Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling at Drake University. On August 18, 1956, he married Charmaine Daugherty in Kearney, Nebraska.

John taught and coached boys’ basketball for ten years in Albert City and for twenty-eight years in Humboldt. Before the end of his career, he was recognized as the leading active Win-Leader at 522 and inducted into Iowa Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996. Without hesitation, however, John would, always, quickly credit his success to his outstanding players and assistant coaches. In 1999, he retired as a Guidance Counselor but continued selling real estate for Smith Real Estate through 2014. After retiring, John, still, enjoyed and supported the beloved “Wildcats” as well as the many activities involving his children and grandchildren.

John is survived by his wife, Charmaine; his sons, Gary (Diane), of Ankeny, and Kent (Jane), of Le Mars; his daughter, Mary Westphal, of Des Moines; his grandchildren: Brooke (Nate) Gould, and Michael Westphal, both of Ankeny, Scott (Whitney) Westphal, of Omaha, Brad (Amanda) Westphal, of Le Mars, and Tyler (Courtney) Westphal, of Minneapolis; his great-grandchildren: Daniel, Carter, Ethan, Parker, Elijah, and Callie; his sister-in-law, Rosemary Westphal, of Alta; and his brother-in-law, Larry Daugherty. John was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Melvina Honsbruch, Erma Stief, Evelyn Braunschweig, and Arlen and Ervin Westphal.

John found the greatest joys in life with his family, friends, and those who shared his love for sports. In his subtle way, he strove to teach important life skills to his students, children, and grandchildren. His faith in God served as his guidepost in life.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
