Myrtis Marie Allen
September 1, 1934 - September 13, 2017

Mrs. Myrtis Allen, age 83, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at her rural Albert City home.

Myrtis Marie Nordine, a daughter of Floyd and Marie (Anderson) Nordine, was born in Albert City, Iowa, on September 1, 1934, in the farm home of Grandpa and Grandma Anderson. She grew up on a farm near Albert City and was confirmed at the Albert City Evangelical Free Church where she remained a lifetime member. In 1952, she graduated from Albert City High School. Then, she continued working at the Buse Brother’s Food Store in Albert City as she had throughout her high school days. On January 7, 1954, Myrtis married Gene Allen of Albert City after he graduated from Iowa State University. Their marriage of sixty-two years was blessed with three sons: Gary, Bruce, and Michael. They spent the first two years of their marriage, however, in Roswell, New Mexico, while Gene was serving on active duty in the US Air Force. Returning to Albert City in April of 1956, they remained there for the next fifty years raising their family and farming. Most of those years, Myrtis spent as a “stay at home” mom and homemaker helping Gene with the farm work.

Myrtis cherished the fellowship she had with her church family. For all but the two years she spent in New Mexico, she found joy in using her God given gifts to serve as a choir pianist and church organist. In addition, she enjoyed the time she spent in F.C.W.M. and serving on its board. Moreover, she felt a special bond with the church youth. As a member of the Happy Hour Club, the Thursday Apron Club, and the prayer shawl ministry shared by women of the three churches in Albert City, Myrtis enjoyed many years of friendship with neighbors and friends. She will be remembered as a woman who loved and honored both her immediate and her extended family. She, also, took a sincere interest in the families within her church and community and always wanted to know what experiences those families were having. Otherwise, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She will be deeply missed.

Those grateful for having shared in her life include her three sons: Gary (Diane) Allen, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Bruce (Connie) Allen, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Mike Allen and Cindy Falk, of Champlin, Minnesota; her grandchildren: Kyle Allen (fiancée, Courtney Stubblefield) of Westminster, Colorado; Kelli (Chris) Beedle, of Soldier, Iowa, Erica Allen, of Rochester, Minnesota, Rob Allen, of Ankeny, Iowa, Katie Allen, of West Des Moines, Iowa, Chris Allen and Marie Campion, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Emily Allen, of Seattle, Washington; three great grandchildren: Morgan, Aaron, and Kathryn Beedle, of Soldier, Iowa; and three siblings: Everett (Sandra) Nordine, of Rapid City, South Dakota, Millicent (Don) Fredrickson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Leland (Pam) Nordine, of Centennial, Colorado; as well as other extended family members and many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gene, on September 17, 2016; her brother, Burnett Nordine; and her in-laws, Ray and Amelia Allen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 18, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place Sunday, September 17, 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is overseeing the arrangements.
