Ruth L. Winebrinner
December 15, 1931 - September 12, 2017

Ruth L. Winebrinner, age 85, of Sac City, Iowa, formerly of Newell, Iowa, died on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.

Ruth Lucille Hardyk was born on December 15, 1931, to Anton and Hattie (Hensel) Hardyk at their farm home in rural Sac County, Cedar Township. Baptized on March 13, 1931, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in rural Sac City and confirmed on March 25, 1945, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Knoke, she attended school at Cedar No. 2 until the eighth grade. Then, she started parochial school in Knoke, Iowa. Next, she attended Lytton High School, graduating in May 1949. From there, she enrolled at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and, in 1950, began teaching at Williams No. 5 south of Fonda. On October 6, 1950, Ruth married Edward Winebrinner. Their union was blessed with six children: Donald, Dennis, Susan, Michael, Martin, and John.

Edward spent two years in the Army, during which time Ruth continued to live with her parents. After his discharge from the service, Ed moved her to the farm south of Fonda where he was farming. In 1954, however, they moved to Newell. Ruth kept busy raising their children and gardening. She, also, taught Sunday school for a number of years. In 1961, Ruth joined Al-Anon, becoming active in the fellowship it offered.

With all her children in school, Ruth returned to teaching for two years at Zion Lutheran School in rural Storm Lake. Then, after all the children had left home, she took a part-time job at the Newell Good Samarian Home. She loved working there. After Ed retired, she helped him build a summer cabin on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake where they enjoyed their summers until 2002. Then, they sold the place and made Newell their year around home. She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, reading, crocheting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed “Blacky”; her son, Michael; her grandson, Jeremy Winebrinner; and her sister, Norma. She is survived by her children: Don (Darlys) Winebrinner, Dennis (Debbie) Winebrinner, Susan (Marlow) Scheffer, Joan Winebrinner, Martin (Pam) Winebrinner, John (Susan) Winebrinner; her grandchildren: Tiffany (Kevin) Gloodt; Jill (Jamie) Tuttle; Caleb, Eric, Joshua, Kayla, Travis, Shaun, and Todd Winebrinner; and Brandie (Dustin) Winham; four great grandchildren: Kalyn and Kristopher Gloodt, Talus and Titan Tuttle; her brother, Anton (Alice) Hardyk; and her sister, Dorothy (Walter) Wichert; as well as by extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sac City. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. A luncheon will be served after the burial at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell.
