Arlene A. Meseck
December 14, 1927 - August 18, 2017

Arlene A. Meseck, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, August 18, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Arlene Ann Thoma, a daughter of Herbert, Sr., and Nettie (Victor) Thoma, was born on December 14, 1927, in Pocahontas County, Iowa. Baptized and later confirmed at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa, she attended Grant #4 school through the eighth grade in Storm Lake. On March 21, 1952, she married Robert Meseck at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children: Gary and Kristine.

A member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Storm Lake, Arlene planted and cared for flowers at the church and in the church. She mowed the church cemetery and church grounds and belonged to the Women’s Fellowship. In addition, she held several offices within the church. Otherwise, for many years, she enjoyed making chicken noodle soup and chili to serve to the Men’s Club. She will, also, be remembered for making Sunday morning coffee for fellowship following the church services. After St. John’s United Church of Christ closed, she attended the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell.

Arlene loved to garden and take care of her flowers. She enjoyed fussing in the kitchen right up to the end of her life, cooking and baking and always feeding others – even strangers that happened to stop by. Arlene treasured animals, especially her cats with a special one named Cutie – her house cat. She had to clean her house every weekend and had to have everything spotless. She treasured her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 65 years, Robert Meseck, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her children, Gary (Carol) Meseck, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Kristine (Mike) Wester, of Independence, Iowa; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly; her brother, Gerald (Mary) Thoma, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; and her sisters, Lorraine Reisdorph, of Sioux City, Iowa, and Bonnie Ressler, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; as well as extended family members and many friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Herb and Nettie Thoma; her brothers, Herb, Jr., Ronnie, and Eugene Thoma; and her sisters, Marcedas Hamer and Freda Parrish.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell. Burial will follow in St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Storm Lake. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The family requests that memorials be made to the Grant Township Trustees in care of the St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
