July 10, 1920 - August 22, 2017

Martha Lenora Nielsen, age 97, of Alta, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at the Sunset Knoll Care Center in Aurelia, Iowa.

Martha, the daughter of Niels and Maren (Jensen) Vesgaard, was born on July 10, 1920, in Alta, Iowa. Baptized and later confirmed at the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, Martha attended school in Alta, graduating from Alta High School in 1939. On September 17, 1944, she married Charles Victor Nielsen in Cotati, California. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Diane, Peter, and Robert.

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, she, also, belonged to the Alta Golf and Country Club. She loved playing golf. In addition, she enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge. Indeed, she belonged to two different Bridge Clubs as well as other card clubs. Moreover, she loved planting flowers, reading, cooking, and traveling to California and Colorado. Of course, she valued her family and treasured the time she was able to entertain family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Diane Pedersen, Peter (Cindy) Nielsen, and Robert (Jane) Nielsen, all of Alta, Iowa; her grandchildren: Lacey (Lee) Anderson; Lisa (Craig) Lewis; Adam (Kara), Jon (Katherine), and Luke (Brooke) Nielsen; and Ronald (Kelli) and Tyler (Cara) Pedersen; her great grandchildren: Sage, Sawyer, and Baby Girl Anderson; Ethan and Zackary Lewis; Brynn, Kace, Kendall, Kinley, and Tenley Nielsen; Addison, Brock, Kash, Kerrigan, Kodey, and Parker Pedersen; and her sister, Betty O’Bannon; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Niels and Maren Vesgaard; her parents-in-law; her husband, Charles Nielsen; her brothers: Martin (Louise) and Reyhert (Doris) Vesgaard; her sister, Edna Vesgaard Elwood Loving; her brother-in-law, Roger O’Bannon; and her son-in-law, Al Pedersen.

Memorial services will be held Friday, August 25, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta. Burial will follow in the Scandinavian Cemetery in rural Alta. Visitation will be Thursday, August 24, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Alta. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Alta is in charge of the arrangements.
