Wayne Dorrel Radke
June 20, 1924 ~ June 2, 2017 (age 92)

Wayne Dorrel Radke was born on June 20, 1924, to Fred and Marie Radke in Cherokee County, Iowa, and arrived at his eternal home on June 2, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center after suffering a heart attack.

Baptized on June 26, 1924, and confirmed on March 21, 1937, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hanover, Wayne remained a member of that congregation his entire life. Moreover, he attended St. John's Lutheran parochial school. At the age of 18, he volunteered to join the United States Navy during World War II. After serving his country in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1046 and receiving an honorable discharge, he came home to work for area farmers and to begin farming on his own in 1948.

On March 5, 1947, Wayne married Margaret C. Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta. Their love for each other thrived through sickness and in health, and they celebrated seventy years of married life on March 5, 2017. Indeed, God richly blessed their union with three daughters. The couple farmed until 1986, at which time, they retired to their home in Alta. After moving to town and "retiring," Wayne worked for three years at the Alta Lumber Company and for ten years with Buena Vista Mutual Insurance in Storm Lake.

Generous, kind, and graced with a wonderful sense of humor, Wayne made friends with everyone he met! Blessed with a beautiful singing voice, he thoroughly enjoyed his time with the Barber Shoppers and a quartet made up of his brothers. He made sure his home was always filled with singing -- often Barbershop music and his favorite hymns! An active member of the V. F. W., the Kiwanis, and the Alta Country Club, he participated in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2015, an experience which gave him a great thrill. Otherwise, he, especially, enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Canada with his grandsons, golfing, playing cards and having coffee with his many friends. His greatest joy, however, came from the time he spent with his family. He, truly, lead a full and blessed life!

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Margaret: his three children: Linda, Janet, and Marcia; his six grandchildren: Mark, Scott, Jeff, Nathan, Zachary and Lindsay; his eleven great grandchildren; his two great, great grandchildren; and his two brothers, Donald and Leland They all loved him dearly! He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Erwin, Orville, Harold, Merle, and Darrell; and his sisters, Esther and Darlene.

A faith-filled follower of Christ, his confirmation verse is especially fitting. "Be though faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life." Rev. 2, verse 10. Most certainly, he has joined his family and friends in his eternal home.
