Floyd Myer
October 13, 1922 - June 6, 2017

Floyd Myer, age 94, of Marathon, Iowa died on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Floyd Myer, a son of George Herbert and Margaret (Heilman) Myer, was born in Wallace Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, on October 13, 1922. Home schooled by his parents, he lived his youth in Wallace Township. At the age of 21, Floyd committed his heart and life to Jesus. Moreover, he felt honored to serve as a counselor at the Raccoon River Bible Camp near Scranton, Iowa.

On May 3, 1950, Floyd married Ruth E. Pischel at the Pleasant Ridge Friends Church near Glidden. Subsequently, their marriage was blessed with three daughters: Ruth Evelyn (Evie), Esther Joyce, and Ellen Marie. Following their wedding, Floyd and Ruth farmed near Emmetsburg, Iowa, for two years before moving to Utica, Illinois, where they farmed for eight years. In January of 1960, they moved to the Myer family farm near Marathon, but from 1958 until 1960, Floyd farmed that acreage while traveling back and forth between Illinois and Iowa. The day came, however, when he had to drive his John Deere self-propelled combine from Illinois to Iowa, an experience which became one of his most treasured and shared memories! Floyd resided on that farm until death of his wife, Ruth, in 2011. He, then, moved to the Country Side Living in Albert City. Even though he lived in Albert City, he, still, made daily trips to the farm which remained a very important part of his life.

Floyd put his faith first, making it an integral part of his life. He and his family worshiped at the Marathon Evangelical Free Church where he served as chairman of the church board, trustee, and Sunday school teacher. After that church closed, they attended the Albert City Evangelical Free Church where they became active members. In turn, Floyd served that congregation in many capacities. Actively involved with the Twin Lakes Bible Camp near Manson, Iowa, as well, he oversaw many special projects there. In addition, Floyd enjoyed participating in the Albert City Threshermen’s Field Days from their inception,. For many years, he mowed the grounds and drove the gas tractor for the annual celebration.

A very gifted as a “fix-it” man and “jack of all trades,” Floyd could do most anything. He enjoyed attending auctions, fishing, hunting, and teaching his grand children how to clean their game. He loved traveling with Ruth, especially on their trips to Alaska and Texas and to wherever his children lived. He loved his family very much and cherished the time and experiences he could share with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His mind worked more quickly than he could relate his thoughts to those he was visiting. In addition, he will be remembered as a man who had the gift of witnessing and sharing his faith in Christ with those he met on life’s journey.

Floyd’s life will always be honored and cherished by his family which includes his daughters and their spouses: Evelyn (Evie) and Greg White, of Jefferson City, Missouri, Esther and Dan Mullen, of Fonda, Iowa, and Ellen and Roger Buehler, of Odebolt, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jorgen (Amanda), Bjorn (Britney), Adam, Bradley (Simmie), Abby (Jordan), Barry, Josiah, and John; two brothers: Maynard, of Marseilles, Illinois, and Dale, of Ottawa, Illinois; and two sisters: Mildred (Millie) King and Mae Thompson, both of Florida; as well as by other extended family members and many lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth, on August 1, 2011; five brothers, including his twin brother, Lloyd; and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 11, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is overseeing the arrangements.
