Karn Jean Monson
January 11, 1953 - June 1, 2017

Karn Jean Monson, a daughter of Wayne and Cleo (Schott) Cole, was born on January 11, 1953, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Spending her childhood years in Storm Lake, she attended Storm Lake Community Schools and graduated as valedictorian in 1971. Next, she worked at the Commercial Trust and Savings Bank in Storm Lake until 1976.

On August 28, 1971, Karn married Darwin Monson in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Alison, in 1978, Tim, in 1982, and Darci, in 1984. In 1976, they moved to Iowa Falls for a couple years before moving on to Garner, Iowa. In 1983, they moved to Cedar Rapids and then to Cherokee in 1989 where they resided for over eight years before moving back to Cedar Rapids.

In 1998, Karn moved to a nursing home in Cherokee because of complications from her longtime battle with Multiple Sclerosis which was diagnosed in 1981. Even though her health had deteriorated over the years, her love, faith, and determination never wavered. She liked to sing and cook. In addition, as a member of the Meriden Evangelical Free Church and the Christian Women’s Club, she loved to share her message of faith with others and host Bible study classes. Most of all, however, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

On June 1, 2017, Karn passed away at Sunset Knoll in Aurelia, Iowa, at the age of 64. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Cleo Cole; and her grandparents.

She will be, lovingly, remembered by her sister, Jan (Joel) Thevenin, of Aurelia and their children, Austin Thevenin, and his fiancée, Sheena Smith, and Shaina (Sam) Bonin, of Bondurant, Iowa; her three children, Alison (Tyler) Simoens, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tim (Taryn) Monson, of Orangeville, Pennsylvania, and Darci Monson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and her grandchildren: Layla, Lane, and Cole Simoens; Cayden Howell; and Ryder, Deklan, and Beck Monson; as well as by several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Greenwood Funeral Homes, Cherokee, Iowa, 2017.
