Jack L. Kooker, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Jack Leroy Kooker, a son of Kenneth and Lenora (Olsen) Kooker, was born on May 6, 1935, in Des Moines, Iowa. Growing up, he attended school in Des Moines and Moville, graduating from Moville High School in 1954. Next, he enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1956. Upon returning home, Jack enrolled at Westmar College, in LeMars, Iowa, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1960. Then, he furthered his education at the University of Missouri at Maryville, earning a Master’s Degree in Education.

While attending Westmar College, Jack met Sally Shearer, the love of his life. On August 19, 1961, he married Sally in Kingsley, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Mark, Jeffrey, David, and Ann. For many years, Jack worked as the Storm Lake Elementary School Principal. Moreover, he served on the Red Barn Board from 1980 to 1986, the Storm Lake City Council from 1990 to 1993, and the Faith, Hope, and Charity Board. Moreover, he participated in the Lions Club and the Elks Lodge. Currently a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, he participated in the Knights of Columbus. Indeed, he served as a Grand Knight as well as on the CCD Board.

Jack, particularly, enjoyed cooking, family gatherings, family picnics, and watching Storm Lake High School and Buena Vista University sporting events. He liked outdoor activities: golfing, fishing, and taking photographs. Throughout the day, he would check his emails and Facebook account to ensure he was staying in touch with family and friends. He, fully, enjoyed giving advice, telling stories, and making a difference in the life of a child. In addition, he, thoroughly, treasured spending time with his grandchildren and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Mark (Jana) Kooker, of Des Moines, Iowa, Jeffrey Kooker (Dawson R. Murchison), of Poulsbo, Washington, David (Renee) Kooker, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Ann (Bob) Radvansky, of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his grandchildren: Taylor Kooker, of Des Moines, Iowa, Benjamin Kooker, of Des Moines, Iowa, Jacklyn Radvansky, of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Ashleigh Radvansky, of Anchorage, Alaska, Kari Sneitzer, of Cleveland, Ohio, Elizabeth (Adam) Sneitzer, of Washington, DC; his brothers-in-law: Rex (Darlene) Shearer, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Martin (Cathy) Shearer, of Luverne, Minnesota; and his sister-in-law, Shirley Kooker, of Spencer, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Kooker; his parents, Kenny and Lenora Kooker; his brothers, Earl and John Kooker; and his parents-in-law, Clifford and Dorothy Shearer.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 22, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Kingsley, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
