Carroll Dean Cone
April 5, 1932 - March 3, 2017

Carroll D. Cone, age 84, of Alta, Iowa, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, March 3, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Carroll was born to Leonard and Hulda (Grieme) Cone on April 5, 1932, at the Swallum Hospital in Storm Lake. In 1950, he graduated from Hayes Consolidated School, rural Storm Lake. Then, he helped on the farm and worked for the DeKalb Seed Company until he was drafted into the Army in 1952. He, respectfully, served his country in Korea during the Korean Conflict in the Fire Directional Center. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

August 26, 1954, Carroll married the love of his life, Patricia (Whalen) Cone. They started their farming career and married life in rural Alta. Subsequently, four children were born to their union. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Carroll never missed an event his children or grandchildren were participating in. Although he, especially, enjoyed sporting events, he remained a faithful man-in-the-stands for music concerts, speech contests, and church events.

A competitor starting with 4-H show calves, he, always, strove to win whether playing basketball, pitching horseshoe, engaging in tractor pulling contests, playing card games, or entering the field the first to plant.

Besides his family, Carroll enjoyed farming, selling seed corn, and coaching little league baseball. Indeed, he loved all aspects of farming from preparing the fields for planting to the challenges of raising production seed corn to the beauty and joy of harvesting the crops. A successful seed salesman, he, also, loved the challenge and interaction with fellow farmers. Lastly, with an eye for every child’s potential, he, always, found a way to help each player develop skills, gain confidence, and find success in little league baseball and life. Befriending everyone he met, he made each person feel special.

During their sixty-two years together, Carroll and Pat had the opportunity to take many memorable trips all over the world along with participating in fun family events and celebrations (shindigs).

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Brenda (Darwin) Nickolisen, of Alta, Iowa, and Laurie (Larry) Miller, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his son Kevin (Cindy) Cone, also of Storm Lake, Iowa; his seven grandchildren: Joshua (Jaycie) Miller, of Ankeny, Iowa, Justine Miller (Brian Heinsohn), of Ida Grove, Iowa, Jerrica (Mark) Brenner, also of Ida Grove, Iowa, Nathan (Danielle) Nickolisen, of Bath, North Carolina, Kayla Nickolisen (Yvan Mugabo), of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Kylor (Hilary) Cone, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Nolan (Katie) Cone, of Alta, Iowa; four great-grandchildren: Bryce, Brantly, and Bree Brenner and Nora Miller; and his sister, Pauline Alkire, as well as many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Deanna; his parents and parents-in-law, Leonard and Hulda Cone and Francis and Marie Whalen, Lois (Lundberg) Whalen: and his brother-in-law, Burrell Alkire, Jr.

Carroll wanted to contribute to ongoing research to find the cause of and a cure for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be sent to Unity Point Hospice, Storm Lake Chapter.
