Arnie B. Hicks
November 26, 1927 - January 17, 2017Arnie Blair Hicks, age 89, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.
A son of Earl Frost and Anna (Everhart) Hicks, Arnie was born on November 26, 1927, in Lohrville, Iowa. After attending school through the fourth grade in Lohrville, he moved with his family to Minnesota. In a few years, however, the family moved back to Lake City where Arnie graduated from high school in 1946. On February 28, 1947, Arnie joined the United States Air Force. As a B-29 Mechanic stationed in England during the Berlin Airlift, he, proudly, served his country until his honorable discharge on February 27, 1950.
Following his military service, Arnie was baptized at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. As a young man, he loved to go dancing. One evening at the Cobblestone in Storm Lake, he met the love of his life, Donna Joy Sundberg. On June 3, 1956, they married at Trinity Lutheran Church. Then, he joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove and served many years on the church council. His faith grew steadily through the years. In addition, his marriage to Donna was blessed with four children: Julie Ann, Lorie Jean, Randall Blair, and Marcy Joy.
Farming and soil conservation played major roles in Arnie’s life. He worked for the Buena Vista and Clay County Soil Conservation Offices for thirty-one years. Although he retired from the S.C.S. in 1983, he remained a loyal conservationist and served on the Buena Vista Conservation Board for twenty-five years.
In his spare time, Arnie enjoyed camping and fishing, often with Donna’s sister and her husband, Doris and Dick Inman. Moreover, they often traveled to visit relatives and their son, Randy. In addition, he loved to tell stories, meet with his coffee group, and play cards. He, always, attended his children and grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. Arnie will, certainly, be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty years, Donna Hicks, of Linn Grove, Iowa; his children: Julie (Norman) Vorland, of Clear Lake, Iowa, Lorie (Tim) Wittmaack, of Linn Grove, Iowa, and Dr. Randy (Marsha) Hicks, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; his grandchildren: Rachel, Adam, and Austin Hicks; Jacob (fiancée, Kate Delaney) and Alyson Vorland; and Nathan (Jennifer), Cody (Amanda), and Nick Wittmaack; his great grandchildren: Madison, Maxwell, Miles, and Saylor Wittmaack; his brothers-in-law, John Darrell (Margaret) Sundberg, of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and Ernie Hoover, of Hawthorne, California; and his sisters-in-law, Donita Hicks, of Sac City, Iowa, and Darlene Hicks, of Deadwood, South Dakota; as well as extended family members and friends.
Arnie was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Marcy Joy; and his siblings: Paul, Gertrude, Louise, Robert, James, Eleanor, Dorothy, Alan, and his twin brother, Everett.
