Richard A. Taylor
May 4, 1949 - December 11, 2016

Richard went home to God on Sunday, December 11, 2016, while in hospice care at his home after a battle with cancer.

Richard Arthur Taylor was born on May 4, 1949, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Wallace and Phyllis (Morris) Taylor. He was the first grandchild of Roy and Marie (Donaldson) Morris and Arthur and Lily (Daughter) Taylor. They all were delighted. Later, Richard’s three siblings, Allen, Susan, and David, joined the family. They were a warm and loving family. Richard grew up in the Storm Lake and Newell, Iowa, area.

Very much a shepherd at heart, Richard loved working around and caring for animals. In addition to raising livestock, he, also, enjoyed working in his gardens.

He attended elementary school at Hayes Consolidated and Storm Lake Junior High. After graduating from Newell Providence High School, where he played football, and belonged to the FFA, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he became a member of the first crew to service on the first Poseidon Class Nuclear Submarine, the USS James Madison. For his service, he received a Presidential Commendation.

After Richard returned home from the sea, his cousin, Greg Drzycimski, introduced him to Bonnie Meyer. What a wonderful match they made! Richard and Bonnie married on September 1, 1973, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley, Iowa. After their wedding, they settled in Storm Lake, Iowa, where they welcomed a son, Jason. Longing for the country life, they began the hunt for an acreage. Finding a fixer upper, they made it into a home where they welcomed their daughter, Ann. So, began the joys and wonders of family life in the country.

During the next twelve years, Richard worked for Hygrade in Storm Lake. Then, Don’s Farm Supply of Newell became his home away from home for thirty-three years until he retired in July of 2015. While working at Don’s, Richard enjoyed getting to meet and know many wonderful people, which he saw as a perk of his work.

A man of faith, Richard enjoyed attending St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell and the First Lutheran Church in Fonda, Iowa. In addition, he liked studying the Bible, listening to the Christian radio station, and discussing religion with family and friends.

Those who will cherish his memory include Bonnie, his wife of forty-three years of Newell, Iowa; his son, Jason (Angela) Taylor, and their children, Robert, Emma, and Grace, of Washington, Iowa; his daughter, Ann (Brian) Wise, and their children, Cole and Corinne, of Newell, Iowa; his mother, Phyllis Taylor; his brothers, Allen (Marilee) and David (Andrea) Taylor; his sister, Susan (John) Marshall; his sisters-in-law, Marlene (Roger) Duhn and Julie (James) Swenson; as well as a large and loving extended family. May God grant comfort and peace to all.

Preceded in death by his father, Wallace Taylor; his mother-in-law, Pauline (Braunschweig) Meyer; and father-in-law, Marvin Meyer, Richard lived as if life were an adventure! He sent messages to us all telling us he found the greatest love and joy when surrounded by family and watching them bond and grow. They are his legacy, the true joy of his heart. Everyone who knew and loved him will deeply miss his smile and his joy of being as well as his ability to show the love of Christ. May he rest in peace and see the face of God.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. The Newell American Legion Post #193 will conduct the Military rites. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 16, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in his honor. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
