LaVon Dorothy Frolund
September 12, 1916 - July 28, 2016

LaVon D. Frolund, age 99, of Newell, Iowa, died on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Newell, Iowa.

LaVon Dorothy Frolund (née Johnson) was born on September 12, 1916. The only child of Jalmer F. and Sarah Ann (Stock) Johnson, she grew up on a farm near Albert City, Iowa, and graduated from Albert City High School in 1933.

While attending a dance in Newell, she met Ole Frolund, a young Danish immigrant. On March 12, 1936, they eloped, running off to her Aunt Mae’s home in Spirit Lake, Iowa, to marry. They raised their two daughters, Virginia Mae and Janet Darlene, while farming north of Newell.

Ole and LaVon loved to dance, play cards with friends, and travel. They journeyed to every state except Alaska plus Mexico and Canada. They visited Ole’s relatives in Denmark several times and were able to travel to other European countries as well.

After her younger daughter left home for college, LaVon fulfilled a lifelong dream of attending college herself. At the time, Ole told everyone that he had two kids in college. After graduating from Buena Vista College in 1965, she taught high school English for four years at Early and Fonda.

A true “hobbyholic,” LaVon applied her artistic talents to gardening, candle making, ceramics, flower design, sewing, and many other artistic endeavors. She enjoyed taking part in her daughters’ activities as they grew and later made a special effort to attend as many of the activities of her grandchildren and great grandchildren as possible.

A member of the Nain Lutheran Church in Newell for eighty years, LaVon taught Sunday school and participated in the “Ladies Aid,” Family Fellowship Night, and other church activities. She belonged to the Danish Sisterhood, the International Guild of Candlemakers, the Buena Vista Federated Garden Club, the Iowa State Education Association, and the Rebecca Lodge. Moreover, she became a 4-H leader.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter: Janet (Gary) Mahood, of Ida Grove, Iowa; her grandchildren: Kurt (Carol) Nussle, of Monroeville, Pennsylvania; Karen Nussle, and her children, Grey and Cole Wigglesworth, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Reece (Camille Marie) Mahood, and their sons, Kiernan and Euan, of Concord, California; and Aileen (Joel) Sullivan, and their sons, Lane and Leo, of Ames, Iowa. Ole, her husband of 54 years, and Virginia Nussle, her daughter, preceded her in death.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the Nain Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will take place one hour prior to services at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
