Iris E Koch Hunnel
July 22, 1932 - August 11, 2016

Iris Elaine Koch Hunnel, a daughter of Ira and Alma (Hurtig) Tesch, was born on July 22, 1932, in O’Brien County, Iowa. She attended country school. On June 29, 1952, she married Jim Koch in Calumet, Iowa. In her younger years, she worked for many neighbors, taking care of their families and cleaning their houses. During her married life, she worked as a waitress in cafes in the many places she lived. She retired from the Pantry Café in Storm Lake after over forty years. Her first husband, Jim, preceded her in death in 1985.

In September of 1992, Iris married Jack Hunnel. They made their home in Paullina. He, also, preceded her in death in 2006. Iris enjoyed dances, especially polkas and waltzes. Most recently, she had taken them up again with her newly found friend, Fran.

Iris passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at the North Lake Manor in Storm Lake, Iowa, having recently celebrated her 84th birthday.

Iris had a great passion for her children and grandchildren. She placed them at the top, but she, also, valued a clean house. In Calumet, Iowa, she belonged to the Zion United Church of Christ.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Steve (Marla) Koch, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Kim (Kevin) Walsh, of Alta, Iowa, her grandchildren, Tyler and Sara (Mark) Koch and Justin (Christina) and Gabriel Walsh; her great grandchildren, Makayla, Jazmyn, Charleigh, Trenton, and Chloe; two sisters and their husbands, Jean (Dick) Edwards and Marney (Bill) Click, all of Paullina; her brothers-in-law, Merle Kuehl, of Granville, and Ed Hattermann, of Paullina; and four sisters-in-law, Darlene Tesch, Shirley Gries, Lillian Koch and Dorothy Thiessen; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends including her special friend, Fran Carlson, of Alta, Iowa.

Iris was preceded in death by her husbands, Jim Koch and Jack Hunnel; her parents, two sisters, Gerda Kuehl and Karen Cooper; her brother, Pete Tesch; her sister-in-law, Norma Hattermann; and three brothers-in-law, Bob Koch, Wilb Koch, and George Thiessen.
