STORM LAKE BUENA VISTA VIDETTE - Fri, Aug 2, 1912 - Although the reports had been unfavorable for more than a week and recovery seemed almost impossible, yet it came as a very keen loss to all when it was learned that Mrs George Steig had given up the battle against death, Monday afternoon at 2. She had been in poor health for several months.

At first it was thought that she was threatened with typhoid fever but later it was discovered that throat poisoning was the cause. Although the swelling broke the the skin, poison was so absorbed by her system that it was impossible to do anything for her. She had been taken to the hospital and the best medical authority and care were brought to her case but without avail.

Mary Albertina Odiet was born July 6, 1862 in Massachusetts and when but a child came with her parents to Iowa and to Storm Lake in 1870. June 10, 1879 she was married at Storm Lake to George Steig and they have always made their home here.

Eight children were born to them: Mrs Arthur Skeels, George, Henry, Joseph, Mrs Claude Skeels, Clarence, Julius, and Rilla. The last three are at home.

In addition to the family there is left the mother, Mrs Mary Odiet of this city; two sisters: Mrs Will Turner of Storm Lake and Mrs Roy Stafford of Hartington, NE; and three brothers: Henry of Fonda, Julius of Montana, and George of this place.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist church, by Rev Place of the Baptist church, the Methodist church being used in order to accommodate the many relatives and friends. While the deceased had never herself been an active church attendant, she proved herself to be a true Christian. Her large family has been reared to manhood and womanhood and never a stray sheep among them.

Being but a slip of a girl when married, motherhood had laid its burden upon her and now with the youngest grown, she herself could have begun to enjoy what she helped to accumulate. Why she should be taken just at this time is one of the hard things of life to understand.
