STORM LAKE REGISTER - Thu, Aug 6, 1925 - George Steig, beloved pioneer citizen of Storm Lake and Buena Vista county and one of the veteran stock men and feeders of an earlier day, died Sunday evening of last week at the Swallum hospital in Storm Lake. Death followed acute sickness of only a few days, though Mr Steig had been known to be in failing health for several months.

About two years ago while at his farm north of Storm Lake, he suffered injuries in a fall. His condition at that time was quite serious, though he rallied from that and since then had pursued his daily tasks regularly. However, it is thought that this injury caused some effects from which he never fully recovered. The first of last week he began showing symptoms of failing rapidly and Thursday became quite sick. He was taken to the Swallum hospital early Friday morning and died Sunday evening at 6:15. At the time of his death he was making his home with is son, Julius Steig in Storm Lake.

George Steig was born in Alsace Loraine, France, Sept 7, 1857 and passed away at the Swallum hospital in Storm Lake, Sunday evening Aug 2, 1925 at the age of 67 years, 10 months, and 26 days.

When he was 14 years of age he left Germany and came to America. The first 3 years were spent in a packing house at Cincinnati, Ohio and at Dubuque. At the age of 17 years he came to Storm Lake and with the exception of a few years he had since made this his home. For a time after first coming to Storm Lake he was employed in the meat market owned by William Harris.

In 1881, in partnership with his brother, Henry Steig, he opened a meat market at Alta and in 1882, after conducting the shop successfully for 2 years, he opened a meat market in Storm Lake in the location now occupied by the Skeels Dry Cleaning Works. In 1892 he sold his business to E.L. O'Banion of this city and shortly after he went to Sioux City where he conducted a meat market for 2 years. After disposing of his business in Sioux City he returned to Storm Lake.

In 1900 Mr Steig and his wife and his brother and sister-in-law, Mr and Mrs Henry Stieg, left on a trip to Germany and he spent several months in the old county.

In 1909 Mr Stieg again opened a meat market in Storm Lake selling the business in 1919 to his son-in-law, A.D. Skeels, who has since continued in the business. Since his retirement from business, Mr Steig has devoted the greater part of his time to looking after his farms.

On June 10, 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Albertine O'Diet and to this union 8 children were born. They are Mrs A.E. Skeels, George F Steig, Henry L Steig, Joseph L Steig, Mrs Claude Skeels, Clarence Steig, and Julius E Steig, all of this city and Mrs L.T. Peterson of Denison, Iowa.

Mr Stieg is survived by his eight children, 18 grandchildren and two brothers: Henry Steig and Fred Steig of this city.

Mrs Steig passed away July 29, 1912.

Short services were held from the Julius Steig home, 301 Ontario street and from the Baptist church. Interment was in the local cemetery.
