Storm Lake Tribune - Sep 27, 1912 - A.T. Shaffer, who took sick while attending the fair at Sioux City last week, died Friday at a hospital in that city. He was taken sick with intestinal obstruction of some sort at the fair grounds and was quickly taken to a hospital but not withstanding the best of care, he died at an early hour Friday.
Deceased was born in Philadelphia April 3, 1833 and was therefore more than 79 years of age at the time of his death. He was married to Irene Jane Bidwell Dec 25, 1854 and to this union 10 children were born, five of whom survive. Two of these are A.I. and C.W. Shaffer of Lincoln township.
Following the death of his first wife he was married again in Whiteside county, IL in 1878 where he lived until 1884, when he moved to Buena Vista county. He was married again in 1886 to Mrs Elizabeth Sassman at Carroll and in 1895, they took up their residence in this city which has since been their home.
Mr Shaffer served 1 1/2 years in the Union army as a private in Co I, 75th Illinois volunteers.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church on Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery.
