Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Thu, Jul 16, 1964 - Storm Lake lost an outstanding citizen and philanthropist in the death of George J Schaller Wednesday evening at the Buena Vista county hospital at the age of 90. The veteran banker passed away quietly while partaking of the evening meal and watching the Barry Goldwater demonstration on television.

Services will be Saturday afternoon at lakeside Presbyterian church. Interment will be in the Schaller crypt at Lake View cemetery alongside Mrs Schaller, who passed away Feb 13, 1957.

George J Schaller was born Dec 24, 1875 on a farm in Sac county of German parents, Fred Schaller, deceased in 1923, and Catherine Miller Schaller deceased in 1939.

When he was 9 years of age, his parents removed to Storm Lake. Here his father entered the mercantile business. George's early training was behind the dry good and grocery counter. He attended Storm Lake grade and high school.

In 1892 when he was 18 years of age, he entered the employ of the Commercial State Bank of Storm Lake under James F Toy as bookkeeper. He continued as teller until 1896. From 1896 until 1897 he was employed as local bookkeeper and collector for the Standard Lumber Co of Dubuque. From 1897 to 1899 served as deputy clerk of district court. He was in partnership with his father, who conducted a loan and real estate business from 1899 to 1902.

In 1902 in partnership with his father, he organized the Citizens Bank of Storm Lake, a private institution and continued until 1911 when the bank was reorganized as a National Bank. On the death of his father he became president in 1922.

In 1899 he was married to Eloise Warren of Rock Valley. To this union were born Catherine Schaller Yon, Harry W Schaller, and Earl F, who passed away 16, and Edward G, who passed away in 1933.
