Greg Winkel
March 26, 1938 - May 13, 2016)

Gregory Milton Winkel, 78, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, beloved husband and best friend of Marilyn (Hike) Winkel for forty-five years, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on May 13, 2016, at 7:03 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Center in Manson, Iowa.

Greg, who was called Gregory only by his mother, was born in Little Rock, Iowa, on March 26, 1938. The family lived in Raymondville, Texas, for a while, and he, also, lived near Newell, Iowa, for several years. After he married Marilyn in 1970, they lived in Sac City, Iowa, and after retiring, wintered in Texas. Known for his sense of humor, he, always, had everyone laughing. In addition, he loved to play pranks on people. Greg enjoyed flying a Cessna 4-passenger airplane, but he, most, liked piloting his 1959 wooden Chris Craft boat. Moreover, he thought of his dogs as “the best dogs in the world.”

Greg worked as a milk truck driver for Lange’s Dairy in Sac City and later as a fieldman for Associated Milk Producers, Inc. (AMPI) based out of Sibley, Iowa. He called many farmers friends. He, also, served on the Sac City city council for twelve years.

Besides his wife, Marilyn, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Greg is survived by his son, Matthew (Sara) Winkel, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and his step-children, David Olerich, of Madrid, Iowa, and Barbara Olerich (Daniel) Friesth, of Granger, Iowa; his grandchildren: Anna and Cody Benton; Holden (Shelbae) and Kayla Olerich; and Grace and Oliver Winkel; his great grandchild, Ryleigh Olerich; his brothers, Lawrence (Alice), Eldon, and Larry Winkel, his sister, Georgia (Charlie) Gerken, as well as by nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Winkel, his dearly beloved mother, Mary (Julius) Winkel, a special sister-in-law, Bette Winkel; and a brother-in-law, Don Kuester.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of the Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa, for all their prayers and support. Greg and his parents were founding members of the church when it started in the 1950s. We would, also, like to thank the Holstein Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Manson Good Samaritan Nursing Home, and Gentiva Hospice. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care over the last two years were a heartwarming blessing to the entire family. We thank God for the gift of his life.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 18th, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa, with Pastor Tim Ried officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the services at the church. Organist for the service will be Elaine Palmer; pianist will be Deb Ried; and soloist Tom Olsen will sing “Celebrate Me Home.” Congregational hymns will be “Blessed Assurance” and “Victory in Jesus”. Casket Bearers will be Cody Benton, Joel Winkel, Shawn Winkel, Jarred Winkel, Nathan Kuester, and Josh Kuester. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Holden Olerich, Jeremy Winkel, Lance Winkel, and Troy Plowman. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery.
