Storm Lake Pilot - Mar 10, 1880 - On Sunday morning last, the slow tolling bell announced that some human heart had ceased to beat and some immortal spirit had "returned to God who gave it." In a few minutes it was known that the deceased was John L Mason, one of the earliest residents of Storm Lake.

He was employed as salesman and apothecary in the drug store of William Harris and while generally known by all our people, there were comparatively few who knew him intimately and well. We mean by this that few knew of his learning, intelligence, generosity and big heartedness. In all these qualities his was the peer of any man in Storm Lake. In the fact that there are few men any where who are more thoroughly posted in history, literature, politics and theology than was this man, John L Mason. When he so elected, he was a most entertaining conversationalist.

Poor Jack Mason had his faults and his follies but in learning he was a scholar, in generosity a philanthropist, and we firmly believe that in God's own good time the grand qualities of John L Mason's heart and brain will be developed and expanded in the future world until they reach that perfection designed by the Almighty.

The funeral took place on Monday and a large number of citizens followed all that was earthly of John L Mason to the grave.
