Storm Lake Register - Nov 18, 1926 - Schultz Martine, one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War and a well known and highly esteemed resident of Storm Lake for many years, passed away at the home of his son, Frank Martine, 125 Hudson street early last Sunday morning following an illness of some time. His death is mourned by relatives and numerous friends.
Mr Martine was taken ill on Decoration day. A nurse was secured and everything that medical aid and loving hands could do was done for him but he has since continued to fail and death came Sunday morning at 4:45.
Shultz Martine was born July 6th, 1840 in New York state and passed away in Storm Lake Sunday Nov 14th, 1926 at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 8 days.
At the age of 7 years, he came with his parents to Illinois where he grew to young manhood and received his education.
He answered his country's call in 1864 and served until the close of the war.
Nov 22, 1866 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth A Bennett and to this union three children were born. They are Frank Martine of Storm Lake; Herbert Martine of Merrill, Iowa; and Chas Martine, who passed away in infancy.
In 1893 the family moved to Storm Lake and Mr Martine has since been a resident of this city.
On April 15, 1916, the wife and mother passed away and on Oct 16, 1918 Mr Martine was united in marriage to Mrs Mary Jane Totman, who died March 1st, 1921, since which time he has made his home with his son, Frank.
He leaves to mourn his death his two sons, 8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the home Tuesday afternoon. Interment was in the local cemetery.
Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were: Mr and Mrs Bert Martine, Mr and Mrs Carl Martine, Frank Martine and Neva Martine of Merrill; Mr and Mrs Harry Johnson of Manson, Mr and Mrs Charles Hammitt, Harley Hammitt, Mrs Clara Mason, and Mr and Mrs Fred Hamm of Lake View; Mrs Jessie Coats of Greenville; Mrs Florence Rankin and Mrs Elizabeth Berry of Spencer.
