March 11, 1921 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Although they knew that she had been in poor health for some time, the friends of Mrs Schultz Martine, Sr were shocked to learn that she had died at Long Beach, CA on Thursday night March 3. She was in poor health when she went to California to spend the winter but it was hoped that the change in climate would do her good. During the past few weeks she had been growing worse. J.P. Coulson and Mrs H.E. Thayer, her daughter, had started for California but did not reach there until after her death.

The body will reach Storm Lake on Thursday evening of this week and the funeral will be held at the Christian church on Friday afternoon. Interment will be in the local cemetery.

Mary Jane Barrows was born near Burlington, VT on Feb 24, 1850 and died at Long Beach, CA on March 4, 1921, being 71 years and 8 days old at the time of her death. She was the oldest child of Mr and Mrs Joseph Barrows and came with them and her younger brothers and sisters to Grand county, WI in the late fifties.

She was married Dec 25, 1866 to Charles N Totman of Cassville, WI who had served in Company C 6th Wisconsin regiment during the Civil war.

In 1876 they came to Iowa, driving through in an immigrant wagon and settling upon a farm in Maple Valley township. In March 1880 they moved to the farm west of town now owned and occupied by J.E. Thayer where they continued to reside until the cyclone of 1893 which destroyed their home and caused Mr Totman's death. Mrs Totman then came to Storm Lake to live and has made her home there ever since, spending most of her winter in the west.

She was married Oct 16, 1918 to Schultz Martine of Storm Lake who survived and mourns her loss together with her five children: Ida, wife of J.E. Thayer and Ella, wife of John Coulson, both of Storm Lake; Jessie, wife of John T Coats; and Florence, wife of C.G. Rankin, both of Spencer; and George A Totman of Quimby, Iowa. There are also 11 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mrs Martine is also survived by two brothers and 2 sisters: William Barrows of Lancaster, WI; George Barrows of Oregon; Mrs V.A. Bryant of Los Angeles, CA; and Mrs Gus Cook of Webster City.
