April 16, 1915 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - All Storm Lake was greatly shocked on Tuesday when the word was received that Lawrence Manchester, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Manchester, had been killed in an elevator accident at Omaha.

Lawrence went to Omaha about three months ago to accept a position in one of the large wholesale houses and was getting along nicely in every way. On Monday afternoon while at work in his department, it seems that he thought he had been called to one of the elevators or had his attention directed to it and while so engaged, an unexpected movement of the elevator caused the car to strike him on the back of the head. He was knocked back, and not into the elevator shaft. At the time, the injury was not thought to be of a serious character and he was given first aid relief at once.

Mrs. Manchester had gone to Omaha last week to visit with Lawrence as he had not been well for a few days and Lawrence told his attendants where she might be found but warned them about unnecessarily alarming her. He was taken immediately to the Presbyterian hospital and on his way there he lost consciousness and did not again become conscious, death following about midnight.

At first the attending physicians believed that his injuries were not serious, but it seems that there must have been internal injury. Mrs Manchester was quickly located and she was with Lawrence during his last hours. Immediate efforts were made to reach Mr Manchester, but it was impossible to do so until Tuesday.

Lawrence was 21 years old and was a young man of great promise. He was a strong character and one who attracted friends to him and he was very popular among his associates in this city where his boyhood and young manhood days were largely spent.

Mr. and Mrs. Manchester and Omaha friends arrived on Tuesday afternoon with the body and funeral services were held at the Manchester home on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by the Rev. T.A. Ambler. Interment was made in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Besides his heartbroken parents, Lawrence leaves a little brother and sister, Horace and Ella. This newspaper wishes to extend the sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family on behalf of their hosts of friends.
