January 10, 1913 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - The news was received Friday morning in Storm Lake, that Dorothy Lawrence, oldest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.H. Lawrence was injured in an auto accident Thursday evening but that the injuries were not thought to be fatal.
Dorothy Lawrence and her friend Miss Whitney were both members of the St Paul's Episcopal church choir in Sioux City and were at choir practice Thursday night. At the close of this two of their classmates, E Brooks Currey and John Knott, started to take them home in the latter's automobile and went for a short drive instead of going home directly.
There was an unexpected turn in the road and the auto went over fifteen foot embankment into a creek. At first, it was thought that Miss Dorothy was one of lesser injured. Her thigh and limb were broken and she was taken directly to the hospital. She seemed to be gaining nicely and it was hoped that she could be removed speedily to her home.
The change did not develop until a short time before her death, which came as a decided shock to all. She died Saturday morning at eleven o'clock from embolism, which is, the formation of a flesh clot in the arteries. The Sioux City Journal had the following to say in regard to the funeral:
The funeral of Miss Dorothy Blair Lawrence, 17 year old daughter of Dr. and Mrs J.H. Lawrence, 1712 Pierce street, will be held today. Private services will be held at the residence at 2:30 o'clock. Services in the St. Paul's Episcopal church will be held at 3:30 o'clock Rev. E.H. Gaynor will conduct the services. The body will be taken this evening at 5:10 o'clock to Storm Lake, Ia., for interment.
Miss Lawrence was injured Thursday evening in an automobile accident at Twenty-first and Myrtle streets. She was thought to be recovering at the St. Joseph's hospital, but died suddenly of embolism Saturday forenoon. Relatives and friends of Miss Lawrence from outside points who will attend the services are Mrs. Guy Wirick, of Harlan, Ia; Arthur Leyson, of Omaha; Mrs. E.K. Stringfield, of Sheldon, Ia., and Mrs Dr. G.C. Mackay, of Sheldon. Mr. and Mrs. G.S. Coman, of California, will not be able to attend the funeral on account of illness. Many high school students will attend the funeral.
Miss Lawrence was a member of the senior high school class. Honorary pallbearers have been chosen from the membership of the L.B.H. club, to which Miss Lawrence belonged. They are Miss Marjorie Sullivan, Miss Gladys Coughlin, Miss Mary Doughty, Miss Ruth Yeomans, Miss Pauline Gray, Miss Carrie Ward, Miss Adele Trauerman and Miss Cora Gray. Active pallbearers will be Chesterman Blythe, Harry Lindberg, Charles Graham, Wilson Clark, Howard McKoane and Carleton Kammann.
Dorothy Lawrence was born here in Storm Lake, seventeen years ago and with her parents went to Sioux City seven years ago. She was a senior in the Sioux City high school and on account of her musical qualification has been unusually prominent in both school and church work, as also socially. She was to have been an actor in the Mardi Gras Ball this year. Since living in Sioux City she has spent a large part of each summer in Storm Lake, thus keeping up her friendships here.
The body was brought to Storm Lake Monday evening and taken to the K. Buland home where the funeral services were held Tuesday morning. After which interment took place in the family lot in the Storm Lake cemetery where the grandparents, the uncle and sister of the departed one are resting.
Those who came to Storm Lake with the body were Mr. and Mrs Lawrence and daughter Harriet, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Alexander, Mrs Guy Wirick and Mr. and Mrs. Claud Wirick. They returned to Sioux City Tuesday afternoon. The six year old brother, John, and the little baby sister were left at the hospital in Sioux City for care while the parents came to Storm Lake.
