Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - February 27, 1895 - Archie Elwin Holcomb, son of Rueben Holcomb, died at his home in Washington township, Buena Vista county, Iowa, Tuesday Feb 11, 1895, aged 19 years, 4 months, and 23 days.
Archie was born in Rush township, Jo Davies county, IL and came to Iowa with the family a few years later. The love of home and those dear to him seemed to serve his strong young arms to work for them to build up their western home.
In 1898 death took from him his dear mother and in a few short months death again claimed his sister Jessie, but he bravely bore up in the hour of affliction and his aged father and little sister, Bessie had began to look upon Archie as the main stay in the old home but death has claimed him and although the chair at the fireside and home and surrounding will often bring to our eye the tears of sorrow and our hearts will ache when we think he is forever gone from us, yet we have the hope that when time shall be no more that we shall meet in that better world. He died without a struggle, with a peaceful look upon his dear face.
Archie was of a cheerful disposition and greatly enjoyed the society of his large circle of young friends. He was followed to his grave by a large gathering of friends. There were brief exercises at the home and were led by his teacher and friend, Francis A Grau of Storm Lake.
Archie was a patient sufferer. About two weeks before dying he took sick with measles which terminated in pneumonia in a violent form. The best medical aid was summoned but despite that and the loving care which was given him, he has passed away.
